Statement
NOW WE'LL DECIDE WHO COMES FROM WHERE
The title, "Now We'll Decide Who Comes From Where," is a phrase that marks the desire to trace. To trace the lineage of something, or someone, or some dynamic in order to make sense of it. To give value by assigning a context.
While the act of tracing itself is invisible, what this act reveals is often clear. The diptych form is helpful for dealing with tenuous relationships. Putting two images side by side, by the fact of proximity alone, allows these images to bloom connective possibilities. The process of making these paintings was like watching them learn how to relate and respond to one another, trace their connections.
Photographs were important to this work. Some of the sources were my ancestors, famous artists, former slaves, Mississippi landscapes, and psychic mediums. Each painting attempts a return to, or of, a photographic reference, though how any one painting relates to another is a matter of resonance rather than logic.
(The title was loaned to this show by poet Kate Greenstreet.)
