Christina Goodman

Statement

These miniatures - the images, the frames, and the techniques - are inspired by Renaissance painting. I compose and paint the pieces using references from a collection of art books and museum visits. I am particularly drawn to the landscapes and details in paintings by Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, and Jan Van Eyck.

I am as fascinated by the craftwork of the frames as the paintings themselves. I base my frame designs on the polyptychs, tabernacles, and other frame styles of the Renaissance. I build the frames with wood using miniature moldings and gild them using a centuries old water gilding technique.
